FREE was created in 2011 to assist communities in creating their own Sustainable Energy Utilities in the U.S. and abroad. FREE is currently working with communities in California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, South Korea and China to help them utilize innovative SEU-style public/private partnerships that deliver large-scale renewable energy and conservation services.
FREE has been encouraged by the recent attention the SEU has received including recognition by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the International Energy Agency.
A key component of the SEU is the Sustainable Energy Bond Program that generates tax-exempt sustainable energy infrastructure financing. It provides immediate measurable results in the form of significant job creation, much lower energy costs for the public and non-profit sectors, and reduced carbon footprints.
